CanSleep Services Announces

Urgent Need for Community to Better Understand Sleep

Coquitlam, BC - October 28, 2009 - Studies have shown that 80% of people with drug-resistant hypertension suffer from sleep apnea (Logan et al. J. Hypertension 2001).  This is only one example of the intimate link between cardiovascular disease and sleep. Despite strong clinical evidence linking serious health risks to sleep apnea, the disorder remains widely under diagnosed.

One possible reason for this disconnect is that some symptoms associated with sleep apnea (excessive daytime sleepiness, weight gain, morning headaches, etc.) may be associated with other issues.  If the patient fails to mention snoring or pauses in breath during sleep, sleep apnea may be overlooked as the cause.  One solution is to provide accessible information about sleep health to the general public and to encourage individuals to ask their physicians about sleep.

2nd Annual Sleep Health Event and CanSleep Open House

In response to the need for sleep health education, CanSleep Services is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Sleep Health Event and Open House on November 21st, 2009.  The event will take place at the new CanSleep office (400-2963 Glen Drive, Coquitlam, BC) between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.  The event will feature three expert speakers: Dr. Richard Smyth, Dr. Wayne Halstrom, and Carly Mann RN.  Each will discuss sleep apnea and snoring from a different perspective.  Admission is free but we will be accepting food bank donations. To RSVP and for more information contact: 604-468-5854, cansleep@telus.net, www.cansleep.ca.
